SEO - How to choose the right keywords
By Bronwyn Evans

What is the first step in optimising a web page? Is one of the most common questions I get asked about search engine optimisation. Choosing the right keywords is always the first step to quality SEO for your website

Consider your products services and benefits.
Make a list of your products, services you offer and the benefits of using your product or service. Many of the words or phrases on your list will be generic with too much competition for low quality traffic. Now you need to take your list and make your keywords more specific to your product or target market.

Narrow your focus.
Consider a Real Estate agent selling commercial real estate in Australia, Targeting Real Estate is to generic, Real Estate is a popular search term with over 40 thousand searches per day but you are competing against over 15 million pages on google for a visitor that may not be looking for commercial real estate in Australia. In fact the majority of these searches will be looking for real estate outside of Australia.

We must narrow our focus, by changing the target phrase to Australia Real Estate we reduce the number of visitors down to only those people looking for Real Estate in Australia (approximately 500 per day) reducing the competition in google to only 4.5 million pages improving your chances for a good search engine position and improved ROI. The real estate agent in our example only sells commercial real estate so they will still get some visitors which are not the ideal customer.

By further refining the search term to be Australia commercial real estate our example real estate agent will be able to attract highly targeted visitor with a good ROI and relatively few competitors (fewer than 1 million). For further keyword suggestions try using the google adwords sandbox https://adwords.google.com/select/Keyword Sandbox

Each page on your website should be optimised for only 1 or 2 focused keyword phrases to give you the best ROI for your Search Engine Optimisation. A ten or 20 page site with focused keyword optimisation on each page will have a better ROI than a similar site using only generic search terms.
